Vocal range test

Sing two notes. Get your range, your closest voice type and songs in a key that fits.

Find your vocal range in about two minutes

You'll sing two notes: your lowest comfortable one, then your highest. Pip listens through your microphone and names them. Nothing is recorded or uploaded.

  • You'll need a quiet room and a mic (the one built into your laptop or phone is fine).
  • Hum for a minute first if your voice is cold.
  • Comfortable notes only. Screamed or squeezed notes don't count.

How the vocal range test works

Your vocal range is the distance between the lowest and highest notes you can sing with a clear tone. This test finds both using your microphone and some maths in your browser: it looks for the repeating pattern in the sound wave, works out the frequency, and turns that into a note name (A4 is 440 Hz, C4 is middle C).

A note only counts once you have held it steadily for about half a second. That rule filters out the things that fool other tests: the slide between notes, a crack at the top, a cough, or the fridge in the next room. Pip follows the note on the meter so you can see what is being heard, and the step only moves on when you say so.

At the end you get your lowest and highest note, the span between them, and the voice type whose typical range overlaps yours the most. The result is saved in your browser so the song key finder and songs by range can use it straight away.

Tips for an accurate result

  • Warm up for a minute. A cold voice tests smaller, especially at the top.
  • Sing 'ahh', not 'mmm'. An open vowel gives the mic a clean signal.
  • Keep a steady, medium volume. Whispering and shouting both read badly.
  • Step down (or up) one note at a time and hold each one. Do not slide.
  • Stop at comfortable. If you have to push, squeeze or scream, that note is not in your range yet.
  • Use the built-in mic on a laptop or phone if that is what you have. A quiet room matters more than a good mic.

What your result means

Most untrained singers measure somewhere between one and a half and two and a half octaves. The two ends matter less than where your voice is easy for a long time, which is why the song tools prefer keys that keep the busy part of the melody in the middle of your range rather than just inside the edges.

What to do next

  • Open the song key finder to see every song in the catalog in the key with the fewest notes outside your range, with the capo position for guitar.
  • Browse songs by range for songs that fit with no key change at all.
  • Create a free account to keep your range and test again in a month. Ranges grow with practice, mostly at the top.

Questions about the test

Is the vocal range test accurate?

It is as accurate as your mic and your room. The pitch is measured in your browser and a note only counts once it has been held steadily for about half a second, so slides, cracks and background noise are ignored. For the best result use a quiet room and sing a clear 'ahh'.

Should I include falsetto or whistle notes?

Include notes you could sing in a song without strain. If you can only reach a note by flipping into a thin falsetto or a squeak, leave it out. You can always run the test twice, once with and once without, and compare.

Why does the note jump around while I sing?

A wobbly or breathy tone reads as several pitches. Sing a steady 'ahh' at a normal volume, a little closer to the mic, and watch the small bar under the note: it fills when you are holding steadily.

Does the test record me?

No. Audio is analysed as it arrives and nothing is stored or sent anywhere. Only the two note names are saved, in your browser, and in your account if you choose to create one.

Which browsers work?

Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on desktop and on phones. On iPhone, tap the 'Allow microphone' button and accept the permission prompt.
