How the key is chosen

For each song we try every key change from six semitones down to six up, sung in the recorded octave or an octave away. The winner is the key with the fewest notes outside your range. When several keys tie, we keep the smallest change, and among those the one that puts the busy middle of the melody nearest the middle of your voice.

"Fits fully" means every note of the lead vocal sits inside the range you entered. "Notes out of range" counts the semitones that still fall outside; for one or two, singing those moments an octave down or up usually works.

Using it with a guitar or a piano

The capo column tells you where to clamp so the open chord shapes play in your key. On piano or a backing-track app, just set the transpose control to the key change shown. Our guide to changing a song's key on guitar covers moving down as well as up.
